NC Surf to Sound Challenge, Wrightsville Beach

The Wrightsville Beach Paddle Club will be hosting a Waterman's Expo and three standup paddle races this weekend. The anticipated weather forecast looks great for the event and paddlers are pumped for this elite challenge.

The events begin with a welcome reception on Friday, November 18, 2011 from 6
p.m. to 8 p.m., with races to take place the following day. (Alternate weather date November 20th).

The day's events will kick off with the Kids Race at 9 a.m. followed by the Elite Surf to Sound Challenge at 10 and finally the Intermediate Harbor Island Challenge at 10:30. The Waterman's Expo will take place that afternoon, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and admission is free.

Those interested in racing can choose to register online for either the Surf to Sound Challenge (6.5 miles) or the Harbor Island Outer Loop (4 miles). The latter is perfect for intermediate and less experienced paddlers while the former is geared toward advanced paddlers. Registration for the Kids Race is free for children 12 and under. Wrightsville Beach, NC Beach Rules

Although we've said farewell to summer, that doesn't mean we have to stay confined indoors! Wrightsville Beach is such a popular place among locals that even after the summer heat subsides, visitors continue to flock to this special place. With fewer crowds and quieter shores, Wrightsville Beach in autumn is a fabulous place to relax and unwind. If you decide to visit this lovely beach, it is important to be aware of the rules and regulations that are in place to maintain the area's environmental and aesthetic qualities. Here is a quick look at some things to remember while enjoying Wrightsville Beach:

Alcohol: Public consumption of alcohol, as well as carrying an open container of alcohol, is prohibited year-round.

Animals: Dog-owners will be happy to know that from October 1st through March 30th, their furry companions are allowed on the beach, as long as they are on a leash. From April 1st through September 30th, no animals are allowed on the beach. (See also: Wrightsville Beach Pet Rules)

Bicycles: Bicycling can be a great way to get around the town of Wrightsville Beach. To stay in compliance with the state and town bicycling regulations, make sure you adhere to these rules. Bicycling on any sidewalk in town is prohibited. “The Loop” is included in this restriction, as it is a sidewalk. Every person operating a bicycle is required to ride as near to the right hand side of the roadway as possible. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast. Finally, North Carolina law requires every person under 16 years old to wear an approved bicycle helmet when operating a bicycle.

Fishing: Fishing is not allowed from any of the bridges in Wrightsville Beach, including the Banks Channel bridges. Places that allow fishing include Johnny Mercer's Pier, some hotels that have sound-side piers and charter fishing boats that offer everything from fly fishing in the sounds to marlin fishing in the gulf stream. Fall can be a fantastic time for surf fishing, as well!

Fireworks: Although some fireworks are legal in North Carolina, setting off fireworks in Wrightsville Beach is highly discouraged due to building density and the potential fire hazard. Fireworks also produce litter, which can spoil our beautiful coastline and potentially harm native plants and animals. Town ordinance prohibits open flames on any public property.

Litter: No bottles, fires or cooking devices are allowed at any time. There are plenty of trash receptacles located along the strand and visitors are encouraged to utilize them to keep the beach litter-free.

Noise: It is unlawful to create any unreasonably loud, disturbing sound levels within the town.

Sea Turtles: For years, sea turtles have chosen Wrightsville Beach as a place to lay their eggs. It is illegal to harass or disturb the sea turtles or their nests. Vegetation: The removal of sea oats or other vegetation is prohibited year-round.

Wrightsville Beach residents, home owners, vacationers, and town officials prepared for the worst, but were extremely thankful when the worst of Hurricane Irene passed by, sparing our beaches and homes. After Irene moved on we were treated to a beautiful Sunday.

The second half of the weekend was spent taking down boards and hurricane shutters, cleaning up debris in yards, and returning things to normal - as well as enjoying the gorgeous beach day. Surfers took advantage of large, clean waves, and beachgoers hunted for huge shells that washed up during the storm.

Though there are a few instances of damage and flooding across the island on the whole the impact of Hurricane Irene was relatively minor. Surfer's Healing Camp for Autism, Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville Beach is proud to host one of the Surfer's Healing camps during their nationwide summer tour. Surfer's Healing is a non-profit organization seeking to enrich the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing. They travel the U.S. throughout the summer visiting various beach towns from Puerto Rico to Hawaii, Malibu to Rhode Island. The Wrightsville Beach Surfer's Healing camp will take place on August 22, 2011. A typical day at a Surfer's Healing camp starts with a check in, getting suited up with a life vest, and getting partnered with a volunteer surfer. Sea Turtle Nests Found on Figure Eight Island, May 2011

Although May is typically early in the season for sea turtle nesting, volunteers at Figure Eight Island already spotted 3 sea turtle nests this week! The Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project reports that these are the most nests spotted in May in 27 years. Another nest was found in Carolina Beach this week, making it a very active season so far.

According to their Facebook Page, "The Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project is a group of caring volunteers that works on a daily basis to help protect the sea turtles of Wrightsville Beach and surrounding areas.... Each summer, volunteers walk the length of Wrightsville Beach every morning at sunrise to look for new sea turtle nests. This allows us to help protect the sea turtle eggs, and ensure that the baby sea turtles hatch safely."

Wrightsville Beach and the surrounding beaches of southeastern North Carolina are traditionally popular nesting sites for female loggerhead sea turtles. Airlie Gardens Concert Series Kicks Off May 6th, 2011

The Airlie Garden Concert Series kicks off tonight, May 6th, 2011 with music by The Wilmington Big Band. Airlie Gardens is a New Hanover County facility on Airlie Rd. close to Wrightsville Beach, NC. The 22nd Annual River to Sea Bike Ride will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2011. Azalea Festival 2011

The NC Azalea Festival is officially hosted in our neighbor city, Wilmington NC, but Wrightsville Beach enjoys the beauty, excitement, and energy that the Azalea Festival brings to our area.

The official kickoff of the 2011 Azalea Festival was earlier this week and the weather has been nothing but cooperative. The azaleas are blooming just in time and residents and visitors alike are enjoying near 80 degree weather.

Some of the gardens on the 2011 Garden Tour are right across the Channel from Wrightsville Beach including New Hanover County's Airlie Gardens and the gardens of Stephen and Leslie Hales.

Besides the Garden Tour, Azalea Festival also features a Garden Party at Greenfield Lake, an Historic Wilmington Homes Tour in downtown Wilmington, a weekend street fair and Saturday parade, concerts at UNCW Trask Coliseum, and, this year, a tennis challenge featuring John McEnroe and Todd Martin. Of course, the famous Belles, a Princess, and a Queen grace our presence at all of these events.

We love Azalea Festival because it gives visitors a great reason to visit our area and see all the assets we have to offer. Away.com, an online travel guide, recently voted Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina one of the ten best places to learn to surf worldwide. They describe our beaches this way (emphasis ours):

World Autism Awareness Weekend, Wrightsville Beach

The North Carolina Surfer's Healing Camp is playing host to World Autism Awareness Weekend in Wrightsville Beach, April 1-3, 2011. The free event is intended for NC families who are impacted by children with some form of autism. There will be tons of activities (land and sea!) for the kids and families as well as information shared by autism awareness agencies and other important support groups.

The event beings with a welcoming on Friday, April 1st at the Blockade Runner Resort on Wrightsville Beach, the event's host hotel, with a meet-and-greet with representatives from Surfer's Healing, music, and walks on the beach and the pier.

Activities will begin Saturday, April 2nd, at Wrightsville Beach Park and include live music, refreshments at no charge, hula dancing, artistic board waxing, face painting, bounce houses, fishing, corn toss, hands-on kids' activities, and a sensory area with toys.

Sunday's activities take place at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort from 10am-2pm and include kayak lessons and kayaking, a Banks Channel and Motts Channel boat cruise, a perfect surfer simulator, sand castle building, volleyball, bocce ball, croquet, and even relaxing on the beach!

Wrightsville Beach is proud to be the location of choice for World Autism Awareness Weekend in North Carolina. It's an amazing resource for families impacted by children with autism with fun and educational opportunities as well as valuable networking with families and professionals.

Wrightsville Beach Quintiles Marathon and Half Marathon

This past weekend was the Second Annual Wrightsville Beach Quintiles Marathon and Half Marathon event which brought approximately 2500 runners for both race events. The race course is one-of-a-kind for our area, bringing runners around the island of Wrightsville Beach, all around the Landfall community, through the neighborhoods of Mayfaire and finishing up at Mayfaire Town Center.

It was a great race day - overcast and cool - with the wonderful backdrop of Wrightsville Beach, Landfall, and Mayfaire. We hope the runners enjoyed the area and the course and are planning their training for next year's race!

We want to congratulate all the runners of the Quintiles Marathon and Half Marathon and thank the event organizers, sponsors, and volunteers who brought it altogether. This is a wonderful event for our area, at a beautiful time of year.

JA Fundraiser: Wrightsville Beach Oceanfront House Getaway

Junior Achievement (JA) of the Cape Fear Region is an organization that brings business education to our local schools. Volunteers from the business community work with organizers and teachers to deliver hands-on programs that teach the key concepts of work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy to young students - starting in Kindergarten!

JA is currently conducting a fundraiser raffle for a week-long stay at a Wrightsville Beach Oceanfront House. The house is being donated for the week by the owner (with no connection to HHW) and we thought this could be a great chance for families and friends to experience the beauty of Wrightsville Beach while donating to a great cause!

The drawing for the raffle will be this Friday, 3/18/11. The cost of the tickets is $10 for 1 ticket or $25 for three. Oceanic Restaurant Renovations

The Oceanic is a popular seafood restaurant and bar known for its location right on the beach along the south end of Wrightsville Beach. Not only do they have amazing views for diners to enjoy while they eat, they also seat diners out on the ocean pier for the ultimate in beach dining.

The Oceanic just underwent significant renovations to its kitchen and dining areas during a 2 month winter closure. Major work had not been done on the building in 20 years and they've now re-opened to a better organized and more efficient kitchen as well as an updated menu. Renovations to the dining areas include more windows, wooden ceilings, an updated bar, fresh paint, and new carpeting. The Oceanic also hosts private parties and did renovations to update their private event space.

Wrightsville Beach Biathlon

The 2nd Annual Wrightsville Beach Biathlon takes place Saturday, March 26, 2011. The event starts with Stand-Up Paddle Boarding followed by a pier-to-pier beach run from Johnnie Mercer's Pier to the Crystal Pier and back to the Blockade Runner Resort.

One of the things that makes this event so exciting is the exposure for Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP). It is one of the fastest growing outdoor water sports because of its accessibility for people of varying abilities. It's definitely not easy but neither is it as intimidating as learning to surf in the ocean. People who love kayaking and canoeing really take to SUP as another way to explore the waterways, get exercise, learn a new skill, and meet new people. Surfers also enjoy this sport as yet another experience on the water that brings out a different, slower, and meditative approach to life on their board.

Wrightsville Beach is an ideal location for SUP because of its protected inland Waterway fueled by ocean currents and conditions. The Wrightsville Beach Biathlon begins in the Banks Channel opposite the Blockade Runner Resort where wind, chop, and battling tides could make for a challenging course. The course then turns west into Motts Channel. The Intracoastal will take the paddlers north underneath the Heide Trask Drawbridge and then east through Lees Cut to circle back to the starting point.

The second event begins back at the Blockade Runner Resort where athletes will sprint through beach access No. 33 to the oceanfront and run 4 miles pier-to-pier, ending back at the Blackade Runner Resort (an event co-sponsor along with Coastal Urge).

The press release for the event states that last year's winner, Chris Curry, completed the course in 1 hour and 24 minutes.

The Wrightsville Beach Biathlon beings at 10 am on Saturday, March 26th with a pre-race meeting at 9 am. Winners will receive complimentary weekends at the Blockade Runner as well as prizes valued at more than $1000 donated by Coastal Urge. The cost for the race is $35 which includes a paddleboard rental and a race t-shirt.

The 2010 North Carolina Holiday Flotilla took place in Wrightsville Beach on Saturday, November 27. The fireworks display lasted 27 minutes - one minute representing each year that the lighted boat parade has made it's rounds in Wrightsville Beach. It was a spectacular ending to a spirited parade that wound through the Intracoastal, Motts Channel, and Banks Channel.

PPD Beach 2 Battleship Triathlon 2010

Wrightsville Beach, NC plays host to the third annual PPD Beach 2 Battleship Triathlon on Saturday, November 13, 2010. Residents and visitors to Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach are invited to cheer on the athletes as they make their way from the Intracoastal Waterway in Wrightsville Beach to Battleship Park along the Cape Fear River - swimming, biking, and running to get there. If you're not a part of this race as participant or cheerleader, then please be advised that traffic throughout the area will be affected during the race time.

The PPD Beach 2 Battleship is a full Iron distance and half Iron distance triathlon. The race starts with a 2.4 (full) or 1.2 (half) mile swim - with the current - point to point in the Banks Channel of Wrightsville Beach. The 112 (full) or 56 (half) mile bike takes competitors from Wrightsville Beach through northern Wilmington, up towards White Lake, and back to the transition area at the Battleship North Carolina. The 26.2 (full) or 13.1 (half) run covers two bridges, starting and ending at Battleship Park.

In Honor of Veteran's Day, 2010

Veteran's Day was established as a national holiday to commemorate the end of hostilities between the Allied Nations and Germany during World War I. Sea Turtle Nesting in Wrightsville Beach

As Sea Turtle nesting season draws to a close around this time of year, we can reflect on how wonderful it is that our beaches are a destination for Sea Turtle species to lay their eggs.

The safety and success of those nests depends largely on dedicated volunteers who patrol the beaches looking for signs of a nest, block off areas of the beach where a nest is suspected or has been confirmed in order to protect the nest, and help the hatchlings make their way safely to the sea. These volunteers are active in the early morning hours, before most of the beach-goers arrive on the strand, looking for signs of "turtle prints" leading from the dunes to the water.

Female Loggerhead Sea Turtles make their way to our shores in the nighttime between May and August, creating a nest deep in the sand up by the dunes and depositing up to 120 eggs in their nest before heading back to sea. Volunteers turn out in the first morning light to look for signs of sea turtle tracks in the sand. Once the beaches start filling up with visitors and the tide starts moving up, these tracks are easily erased and the sea turtle nest can go undetected. If a potential nest is spotted, volunteers can stake out the nest area and do everything they can to ensure it's protected. This is such an important job because of how busy our beaches become during Sea Turtle nesting season.

Wrightsville Beach and southeastern North Carolina is privileged to be home to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center. This organization helps coordinate Sea Turtle Volunteers throughout the area and works so hard to protect nests and hatchlings and rehabilitate sick or injured sea turtles for release back to sea. We are even home to a Sea Turtle Marine Biology Camp for teens to come and learn about Sea Turtles and coastal marine sciences.

Dogs throughout the Wilmington, NC area are rejoicing that they can go back to the beach. For the safety, well-being, and convenience of all beach-goers, Wrightsville Beach has strict laws regarding pets on the town beaches.

No dogs allowed on the beach from April through September
Leashed dogs are allowed on the beach from October through March
Pet waste must be cleaned up island-wide

The fines for not abiding by these rules is $250.00 on first offense (no first warnings!). The Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman moved to this fine structure when they found that town officials were issuing hundreds of warnings and violations kept increasing.

The town of Wrightsville Beach loves our furry friends but needs to ensure the safety and comfort of all residents and visitors.

If you've never experienced the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla at Wrightsville Beach, it is a sight to behold! Wrightsville Beach is proud host of the Annual Pier to Pier Swim benefiting the Cape Fear Aquatic Club. The race is 1.7 miles in the open ocean waters of Wrightsville Beach (with prevailing current) from the Johnny Mercer Pier to the Oceanic Pier.

The 2010 Pier to Pier Swim will take place on Saturday, September 18 at 9 am.

Banks Channel Swim Advisory Lifted - Get Your Trunks On

Lumina News reported that the swimming advisory for Banks Channel that was put into place two weeks ago (between Snyder and Seashore Streets) was lifted by the Division of Environmental Health as bacteria levels are back in line with the EPA's standards for safe swimming and water play. And with temperatures projected in the 90's all week, a dip into Bank Channel may be in order.

Wrightsville Beach Fishing Report - 6/17/2010

We were checking out the fishing report for last week on FishermansPost.com and it looks like action is heating up around Wrightsville Beach. Arlen, of Tex's Tackle (on Eastwood Road), reported that flounder bites has increased inshore and around the inlets and red drum have been active around the Masonboro jetties.

The report went on to say that spanish mackerel fishing has slowed down while king mackeral bite has been strong in the 10-20+ mile range.
