30th Annual Holiday Flotilla - November 29-30, 2013

It's time to make plans for one of Wrightsville Beach's most popular holiday traditions! 2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Holiday Flotilla and the excitement is building. In fact, there are only a handful of spots left for creative boat captains and their crews who'd like to decorate their vessels and dazzle the crowds. Last year's number of estimated onlookers was 50,000!

As always, the fun gets underway on Friday evening, November 29th at 7 pm, with the Atlantic Marine Holiday Launch Party at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort, the Flotilla's Host sponsor. Tickets for this event are $25 and admission is open to the public. It certainly promises to be a fun evening, and will include heavy hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and live music by the Craig Woolard Band.

On Saturday, November 30th, get to the island early, and claim your spot! It's easy to spend the day here and be sure to stop by Festival in the Park, which takes place from 10 am until 4 pm. The festival has become almost as popular as the Holiday Flotilla and is a great place to purchase handmade craft items, photography, art, and other holiday gifts. This year's festival will include a large play area for children with several inflatable slides, bouncey houses, a coloring contest, the Arab Choo Choo, festival food, an antique car show, and over 100 arts and craft vendors.

At 6 pm the main event begins and culminates with one of the most outstanding fireworks shows in the southeast. For updated details, including this year's prizes, judges, and special accommodations packages from the Blockade Runner Beach Resort, please use this link: www.ncholidayflotilla.org.

Why Invest in a Wetsuit for Winter in Wrightsville Beach

Are you a fair-weather beach goer? Love swimming and boogie boarding in the clear blue-green Atlantic waters of Wrightsville Beach, but only as long as the sea water temperature is closer to bath water? With winter on the way, there's no need to abandon some of your favorite pastimes. Owning a wetsuit could open up possibilities that you may have never considered!

Wetsuits have come a long way in recent years and most novice owners are shocked when they realize how toasty they can be in a layer of neoprene. With 4 full-service surf shops right on the island of Wrightsville Beach, suiting up in a little "rubber" is a snap. Just be aware that trying on your first full wetsuit can be…well…an unusual experience. Let's just say that a little previous know-how in regard to pulling on a pair of pantyhose or tights will help. Winter is also a good time for purchasing a wetsuit package, because there are often special holiday deals, and Santa may be willing to participate!

As the proud new owner of a wetsuit, you'll be able to feel the invigorating splash of cold salt water in your face while the rest of you stays nice and warm. Now you can swim, boogie board, kayak, SUP, or paddle out into the lineup with ease. Prepare for prolonged feelings of extreme exhilaration!

Having a jug of warm water in the car for a post-fun rinse is nice along with a changing poncho and a Rubbermaid tub for your wetsuit.

No need to abandon the water now that winter is on the way.  A wet suit is the ideal way to prolong your favorite beach-going days throughout the year.

Enjoy the "off" season!

3rd Annual Surf to Sound Challenge

Let's hope that our Indian Summer weather continues through mid-November! It could make the conditions ideal for the upcoming Surf to Sound Challenge on November 15th through November 17th, 2013. Two WPA-sanctioned races plus lots of great opportunities for spectators are just a couple reasons why this is such an anticipated Stand Up Paddle board event.

The Surf to Sound Challenge kicks off on Friday evening at the Blockade Runner with registration and a reception for paddlers, their friends, and families. At that time, race fees will be collected and race jerseys will be distributed. All participants will also have free admission to Saturday's N.C. Surf to Sound Expo from 12 noon to 6 pm.

The elite 6.5-mile course is for extreme paddlers who will begin the race with a surf start and make their way to the open ocean, through Masonboro Inlet, navigate the channels behind Masonboro Island and finish on the sound side of Wrightsville Beach. The top 3 finishers in Men's 14 and Women's 12'6 will be awarded cash prizes. Additionally, there will be other awesome prizes from the Surf to Sound Challenge sponsors. Other board divisions this year include, Men's Unlimited (over 14), Men's 12'6, and smaller boards under 12'6.

The 4-mile Harbor Island Outer Loop is a flatwater course and perfect for intermediate paddlers. It will circle Harbor Island, pass through Mott's Channel, the ICW, Lee's Cut, and end at the finish line in Banks Channel. The course is especially rewarding and fun because it takes paddlers under all three bridges!

Of course the kids are going to need to try their hand at SUP racing as well! On Saturday, they will have their chance at the Surf Zone Kids Race, which begins at 1:00 pm-sound side in front of the Blockade Runner. This event is free.

On Sunday, November 17th, the East Coast Paddle Surf Championship will take place starting at 10 am. Paddlers will test their wave-riding skills, ocean side, in front of the Blockade Runner. The weekend's festivities will wrap up with an awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon-time TBA. The Blockade Runner Resort is the official headquarters. For more information and to register for the races, view the 2013 NC Surf to Sound Challenge eventbrite website.
