Wrightsville Beach, NC Beach Rules

Although we've said farewell to summer, that doesn't mean we have to stay confined indoors! Wrightsville Beach is such a popular place among locals that even after the summer heat subsides, visitors continue to flock to this special place. With fewer crowds and quieter shores, Wrightsville Beach in autumn is a fabulous place to relax and unwind. If you decide to visit this lovely beach, it is important to be aware of the rules and regulations that are in place to maintain the area's environmental and aesthetic qualities. Here is a quick look at some things to remember while enjoying Wrightsville Beach:

Alcohol: Public consumption of alcohol, as well as carrying an open container of alcohol, is prohibited year-round.

Animals: Dog-owners will be happy to know that from October 1st through March 30th, their furry companions are allowed on the beach, as long as they are on a leash. From April 1st through September 30th, no animals are allowed on the beach.  (See also: Wrightsville Beach Pet Rules)

Bicycles: Bicycling can be a great way to get around the town of Wrightsville Beach. To stay in compliance with the state and town bicycling regulations, make sure you adhere to these rules. Bicycling on any sidewalk in town is prohibited. “The Loop” is included in this restriction, as it is a sidewalk. Every person operating a bicycle is required to ride as near to the right hand side of the roadway as possible. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast. Finally, North Carolina law requires every person under 16 years old to wear an approved bicycle helmet when operating a bicycle.

Fishing: Fishing is not allowed from any of the bridges in Wrightsville Beach, including the Banks Channel bridges. Places that allow fishing include Johnny Mercer's Pier, some hotels that have sound-side piers and charter fishing boats that offer everything from fly fishing in the sounds to marlin fishing in the gulf stream. Fall can be a fantastic time for surf fishing, as well!

Fireworks: Although some fireworks are legal in North Carolina, setting off fireworks in Wrightsville Beach is highly discouraged due to building density and the potential fire hazard. Fireworks also produce litter, which can spoil our beautiful coastline and potentially harm native plants and animals. Town ordinance prohibits open flames on any public property.

Litter: No bottles, fires or cooking devices are allowed at any time. There are plenty of trash receptacles located along the strand and visitors are encouraged to utilize them to keep the beach litter-free.

Noise: It is unlawful to create any unreasonably loud, disturbing sound levels within the town.

Sea Turtles: For years, sea turtles have chosen Wrightsville Beach as a place to lay their eggs. It is illegal to harass or disturb the sea turtles or their nests. For more information on Wrightsville Beach sea turtles or to volunteer with the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project, visit turtles.wrightsville-beach.info. (See also: Sea Turtle Nests in Wrightsville Beach)

Vegetation: The removal of sea oats or other vegetation is prohibited year-round.

Vehicles: No vehicles are allowed on the beach strand or the berm system year-round.

Surfing:  To help maintain the safety of all beach patrons, surfers must be securely attached to their board with a “leash.” For complete details, visit towb.org/Surfing/tabid/62/Default.aspx.(See also: Wrightsville Beach Voted a Top Ten Best Place to Learn to Surf)

Parking: Metered parking is in effect from March 1st through October 31st. Meter rates are $2.00/hour. Parking is enforced from 9am to 6pm. For more information, visit towb.org/Parking/tabid/61/Default.aspx.

Following these rules and guidelines will not only help ensure the safety of visitors and the environment, it will allow Wrightsville Beach to remain a beautiful and fun place to live and play for many years to come.

Sea Turtle Nests in Wrightsville Beach

If you were lucky enough to visit Wrightsville Beach over the summer, you might have noticed a few sea turtles nests along the beach. Although sea turtles lay their eggs in underground holes, a dedicated team of sea turtle enthusiasts takes it upon themselves to mark the nests, so that beach-goers do not inadvertently damage the precious eggs under the sand. This team, known as the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project, is dedicated to the preservation of sea turtles by implementing conservation and protection measures through action, education and collaboration with others.

The sea turtle season begins in May and goes throughout the summer. According to their website, the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project's 2011 season was a success, with a total nest count of 3 – two more than the previous year!

For those interested in learning more about sea turtles, the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project offers “Turtle Talks” throughout the season. These are family-friendly, free events where guests can learn about these magnificent creatures. For those who wish to do their part to help, the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project encourages volunteering, sponsorship and donations. Visit their site at www.turtles.wrightsville-beach.info/index.htm for more information.

For teens who are interested in learning about sea turtles and marine biology, Wrightsville Beach is also home to Sea Turtle Camp. Through this program, students can gain valuable experience volunteering at a sea turtle hospital in Topsail Island, explore the wetlands of the Masonboro Island Preserve and more. This enriching program can be a life-changing experience for any young person who has a passion for coastal wildlife.

With such a treasure trove of natural wonders, Wrightsville Beach and its surrounding areas are truly remarkable places to call home. For information on Wrightsville Beach real estate or investment property in the area, contact Hardee Hunt and Williams at www.HardeeHuntandWilliams.com or 910-256-6998.

Staying Active On Wrightsville Beach, NC

We're not sure whether it's the great weather, the crisp ocean breezes and salt air, or the motivation of wanting to work up an appetite before eating at one of Wrightsville's many great restaurants, but both vacationers and residents of our little island seem to love to stay active. There is no shortage of ways to work up a sweat in Wrightsville Beach - choose your favorite or try something new!

Walking or Running The Loop
You'll see serious runners, people out for a casual stroll, parents pushing strollers, and lots of four legged training partners out for a jog with their people.

Explore the marshes that are teeming with wildlife, or take a shorter surf kayak into the waves. Rentals available from Saltmarsh Kayak Co.

Get in a workout or just explore the island on wheels. A beach cruiser is the ideal mode of transportation to take to the beach, grocery store, or out to lunch on a beautiful summer day. Bike rentals are available from Bike Cycles in Mayfaire Community Center, just minutes from Wrightsville Beach.

Hang 10! Give one of Wrightsville Beach's most popular pass times a try with a lesson from WB Surf Camp. Board rentals also available from several area surf shops.

Stand Up Paddleboarding
More than the latest craze, Stand Up Paddleboarding, or SUP, is an amazing way to explore the coast. Head into the waterway, the marsh, ride the waves, or paddle beyond the breakers. Rentals and excursions available from Hook, Line & Paddle.

If you're really looking for an adventure (and a great workout!) give Kiteboarding a try. You'll ride a wakeboard-type board that is powered by a giant kite. The pros are really fun to watch as they pick up speed and get some major air! Contact IndoJax Surf School for information on lessons.

Grab your racquet and head to Wrightsville Beach Park where there are 4 public hard surface courts available.

If you're staying at the Holiday Inn Sunspree or The Blockade Runner you can make use of the sand volleyball courts there. Otherwise get some friends together at the public court at Wrightsville Beach Park.

During your next trip to our beautiful island take a stroll through the beach town as it once was with a visit to the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History. Learn about the town's origins, early residents, and how road and railroad access from Wilmington brought the island to life.

One of the most fascinating things to look back on is the impressive Lumina - a public pavilion right on the ocean. Pictures depict crowds of visitors enjoying the water, dancing, and social events in the great hall.

The Museum will also give you a glimpse into the challenges the town has overcome, including Hurricane Hazel's devastation in 1954, and the Great Fire in 1934.

You can find The Wrightsville Beach Museum of History at 303 W Salisbury St on Wrightsville Beach. Hours are 10 am - 4 pm Tuesday - Friday, 12 - 5 pm on Saturday, and 1 - 5 pm on Sunday. Admission is free. Learn more by calling 910-256-2569 or at wbmuseum.com.

Wrightsville Beach Weathers The Storm Of Hurricane Irene

Wrightsville Beach residents, home owners, vacationers, and town officials prepared for the worst, but were extremely thankful when the worst of Hurricane Irene passed by, sparing our beaches and homes. After Irene moved on we were treated to a beautiful Sunday.

The second half of the weekend was spent taking down boards and hurricane shutters, cleaning up debris in yards, and returning things to normal - as well as enjoying the gorgeous beach day. Surfers took advantage of large, clean waves, and beachgoers hunted for huge shells that washed up during the storm.

Though there are a few instances of damage and flooding across the island on the whole the impact of Hurricane Irene was relatively minor. Wrightsville Beach is open for business, and ready to send summer out in style during the long Labor Day Weekend. And of course though September 5th will mark the official end of the summer beach season, in Wrightsville Beach the warm weather is here to stay for several more weeks.

Plan a fall trip to our beautiful island and take a look at Wrightsville Beach real estate and think about making this your home. Make a call to Hardee Hunt and Williams to get started - 800-852-1605!

Wrightsville Beach Condos & Real Estate

Purchasing a Wrightsville Beach condo can be the ideal solution to getting the beach property you've always wanted at a more affordable price and with amenities that help improve your quality of life on the island.  A condo on Wrightsville Beach can be oceanfront with water views, private beach access, swimming pool, garage, elevator, and more.

If you've thought before that Wrightsville Beach real estate might be beyond your reach, then looking for a condo on the island might be just the right start for you.  From luxurious oceanfront condos to one bedroom units in one of our island's favorite resorts, there are a ton of great options when it comes to searching for condos.

Wrightsville Beach Condo as a Vacation Home or Investment Property

Condos can be especially valuable when it comes to considering a vacation home or investment property.  HOA's may take care of most of the exterior maintenance freeing you up to simply enjoy the condo and the beach while you're there or while vacationers are staying there.  The peace of mind of having close neighbors while you're away and the ease of having someone look in on your property affords condo owners the confidence and flexibility they need when it comes to a vacation home or investment property.

Wrightsville Beach Condo as a Primary Residence

If you're looking to relocate or retire to a Wrightsville Beach condo, there are options for many different budgets.  Condos on the island come in many forms - from a shared home, to condo developments, to luxury oceanfront resort condos.  If you're choosing a condo as your primary residence, be sure it comes with the amenities you need (and want) for everyday living - think parking, elevator, pool, etc.  The expert agents at Hardee Hunt and Williams Real Estate can help match you up with a beautiful Wrightsville Beach condo that suits your budget and needs for your next primary residence.

Contact Hardee Hunt and Williams

Hardee Hunt and Williams is a boutique Wrightsville Beach Real Estate company with close relationships with many of the island's condo communities.  Whether you're looking for a vacation home, investment property, or primary residence, Hardee Hunt and Williams is your source for Wrightsville Beach condos.

Wrightsville Beach Surfers are Loving Hurricane Irene

While the majority of the population ponders whether to stay or go during a hurricane, surfers rush straight to the beaches to take advantage of unusually high surf and challenging waves.  This is akin to skiers and snowboarders who flock to the mountains during a Nor'easter while the rest of the world cozies up at home.

Surf shops in Wrightsville Beach are celebrating a busy rush as surfers cram to get leashes and bigger boards to handle the larger waves (See: Surfers Catch Big Waves).  While the waves start to swell about 4 or 5 days before a hurricane, many surfers are anxious for the storm to get closer and the waves to get bigger (See: Surfers Braving the Waves at Wrightsville Beach).

Wrightsville Beach is well known for it's beautiful blue waters and great surf, attracting many surfers as well as surf schools and international surf competitions to it's shores.

Hurricane Irene is on it's way to the North Carolina coast but we are generally lucky that it's not set to make landfall in the Wrightsville Beach area.  We're hopeful that the properties, beaches, and personnel in the Outer Banks region as well as the coastal Northeast get through this storm intact.

Labor Day Weekend in Wrightsville Beach NC

Wrightsville Beach NC is an ideal place to celebrate Labor Day Weekend, a holiday long regarded as the closing bookend of summertime.  But summer temps, warm water, and great surf are still in full swing at Wrightsville Beach in early September.  Residents, neighbors, and visitors love to spend the holiday weekend here, dining out along the water and enjoying plenty of time outdoors whether boating, swimming, fishing, walking The Loop, or going to the beach.

Labor Day Weekend is generally a busy holiday in Wrightsville Beach but with a little extra planning, your weekend can be as relaxed - or as active - as you want it to be.  Here are some ideas to help in planning your Labor Day Weekend in Wrightsville Beach.

Reserving a hotel room early or booking a vacation rental well in advance will help ensure that your accommodations are just as you want them.  If you want water views, an oceanfront suite, a 3 bedroom condo with a pool, or other specific amenities, do your research early and call ahead to make your reservations. If you love the room or vacation rental you stay in this Labor Day Weekend, go ahead and book it for next year!  It's never too early to plan for a great vacation.

Wrightsville Beach has amazing dining options - whether you want to eat out for breakfast, lunch, and dinner or if you want fresh seafood right off the pier or straight from the docks.  If you love outdoor waterfront dining, you can pick from some wonderful restaurants.  Along the Intracoastal, popular restaurants include the Bluewater Grill, Causeway Cafe, South Beach Grill, and, across the drawbridge, The Bridge Tender, The Fish House Grill, and Dockside.  For oceanfront dining, The Oceanic has seating right outside on the pier.  There is no shortage of fresh seafood here on the island but there are plenty of options for non-seafood lovers as well.

While many people come to enjoy our white, sandy beaches, blue water, and great surf, others love to take part in activities such as boating, fishing, paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, or biking.  If you've always wanted to learn to surf, try paddleboarding, or even learn kitesurfing, Wrightsville Beach has instructors and equipment to help you get on your way.  We also have boat rentals and fishing charters.

If you need a break from all that activity, then take yourself shopping to our island boutiques or to nearby Landfall Shopping Center, the Forum, or Mayfaire.  Mayfaire also has a state-of-the-art movie theater if you're looking to escape the sun and heat or for a little evening getaway.

Surfer's Healing Camp for Autism, Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville Beach is proud to host one of the Surfer's Healing camps during their nationwide summer tour.  Surfer's Healing is a non-profit organization seeking to enrich the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing.  They travel the U.S. throughout the summer visiting various beach towns from Puerto Rico to Hawaii, Malibu to Rhode Island.  These camps are extremely special and truly enrich the lives of the people who get to participate.

The Wrightsville Beach Surfer's Healing camp will take place on August 22, 2011.  A typical day at a Surfer's Healing camp starts with a check in, getting suited up with a life vest, and getting partnered with a volunteer surfer.  The campers have to get set up with the correct positioning on the surfboard.  They will then be surfing on the board with their volunteer.  Students who are more comfortable in the ocean can even get one-on-one surfing lessons so they can ride the waves on their own.

For people and families of those affected by autism, the Surfer's Healing camp can be transformative.  They can go back year after year and many families form a community around Surfer's Healing.  It is a great day for the campers, families, volunteers, and viewers.

For more information on this event, visit www.SurfersHealing.org.

Sea Turtle Nests Found on Figure Eight Island, May 2011

Although May is typically early in the season for sea turtle nesting, volunteers at Figure Eight Island already spotted 3 sea turtle nests this week!  The Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project reports that these are the most nests spotted in May in 27 years. Another nest was found in Carolina Beach this week, making it a very active season so far.

According to their Facebook Page, "The Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project is a group of caring volunteers that works on a daily basis to help protect the sea turtles of Wrightsville Beach and surrounding areas.... Each summer, volunteers walk the length of Wrightsville Beach every morning at sunrise to look for new sea turtle nests. This allows us to help protect the sea turtle eggs, and ensure that the baby sea turtles hatch safely."

Wrightsville Beach and the surrounding beaches of southeastern North Carolina are traditionally popular nesting sites for female loggerhead sea turtles.  It's so important to have the dedicated volunteers of the Wrightsville Beach Sea Turtle Project, Sea Turtle Camp, the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, and other area organizations looking out for sea turtle nests in order to protect the eggs from foot traffic and predators.

For more information on North Carolina sea turtle nests, see: Sea Turtle Nesting in Wrightsville Beach.

22nd Annual River to Sea Bike Ride, Wrightsville Beach NC

The 22nd Annual River to Sea Bike Ride will take place on Saturday, May 7, 2011.  Starting at the foot of Market Street at the Riverwalk in downtown Wilmington, the casually-paced River to Sea bike ride follows neighborhood residential streets, off-road multi-use paths, and a few busy arterial roadways as it makes it way to Wrightsville Beach Park and back again.

This event is 20 miles round trip with refreshments provided at Wrightsville Beach Park.  Registration is at 8:00am, ride starts at 8:30am. Refreshments and drawing for prizes will be at Wrightsville Beach at 10:00am. There is a trolly option for returning to downtown Wilmington. No pre-registration necessary.

This ride is a great way to explore the area and get a perspective on history, as this bike route follows the Historic Beach Car Line which carried vacationers from downtown Wilmington to Wrightsville Beach by trolley, according to RiverToSeaBikeway.com.  The River to Sea Bike Ride is also a great way to connect with other riders in the area and spend a Saturday morning outdoors on your bike.

For more details and for a map of the bike route, visit RiverToSeaBikeway.com.  Ride safe and enjoy!

Easter Weekend on Wrightsville Beach

For anyone planning to spend the long Easter Weekend at Wrightsville Beach, you probably already know that it's one of our favorite weekends of the year.  The weather is usually warm enough to let you hit the beach and maybe even take a dip in the water.  Here are some more ideas for great activities during the long Easter weekend on Wrightsville Beach:
  • Sunrise Service at Oceanic Pier on Wrightsville Beach - The North Pointe Community Church will be celebrating their 11th Annual Easter Celebration at the Beach on Sunday, April 24th at 7am.  Following the service, there is also an Easter egg hunt for the kids at 9am.  For more information, please visit http://www.npointe.org/events/sunrise-service-at-wrightsville-beach-oceanic-pier-easter-sunday/.
  • Easter Brunch - Wrightsville Beach has tons of great restaurants and many will offer specials menus for Easter brunch.  Some of the popular waterfront restaurants to check out are the Oceanic, Blue Water Grill, and The Bridge Tender as well as some of the resorts on the island including the Blockade Runner and Holiday Inn Sunspree.
  • Wrightsville Beach Boat Tour - Contact one of the local marinas to find out about renting a boat for the morning, afternoon, or full day. You can take a guided scenic cruise with Wrightsville Beach Scenic Tours, do a fishing boat charter, or take a boat out to tour the island on your own depending on your interests or what you want to do.
  • Family Bike Ride - Start out on "The Loop" at the Wrighstville Beach Parks & Rec Dept and then head over the drawbridge and jump on the Eastwood Road bike path that's part of the Wilmington Cross-City Trail.
  • Kayak, Canoe or Stand-Up Paddle Board - Explore the Intracoastal and the Channels by kayak, canoe, or on the latest and greatest SUP (Stand-Up Paddle Boarding).  Rentals are available from Hook Line and Paddle or Wrightsville Kayak Company.
Let us know what your plans are for Easter Weekend.  We know there are plenty more things to do on the island and throughout Wilmington over spring break and the long weekend - we're just getting you started!
